Installing a Home Theater? Leave the Wiring to an Electrician

Keep Your New Carpeting Clean With These 3 Tips

New carpeting looks pristine when you initially have it installed, but it is hard to keep it that way. The daily wear and tear can quickly cause the carpeting to become dirty, and you'll eventually need to get professional carpeting cleaning done to restore it back to its original beauty. Follow these three tips to keep your carpeting clean as long as possible.

Place Shoe Racks Near Your Entrances

People that forget to take off their shoes can track dirt through your home. You can encourage people to remove their shoes by placing shoe racks near all your entrances. It will provide that constant reminder that guests should take their shoes off, and will help you deal with fewer messes.

Use A Carpet Freshener

Your carpeting can easily retain odors caused by pets or dirt from outside. Regularly using a carpet freshener will help neutralize these odors before they get to the point where you desperately need cleaning.

You do not need to buy an expensive carpet freshener either. Consider making your own with a mixture of dried herbs and baking soda. You can sprinkle it over the carpet, let it absorb into the carpet fibers for about 15 minutes, and then vacuum it out.

Clean Tough Spills Immediately After They Happen

It's easy to ignore a spill if it happens while entertaining friends and family. Unfortunately, letting these spills set into your carpeting for a couple hours will make them much more difficult to clean. One difficult spill you may encounter are dark liquids like red wine or fruit punch, which can be cleaned up with a some vinegar or lemon juice.

If using vinegar, blot up as much of the liquid as you can with a paper towel. Squeeze the lemon juice over the stain until it is thoroughly saturated. Blot up all of the lemon juice, all while making sure not to accidentally scrub the area and spread the stain. Let the area air dry, then run a vacuum over the carpeting.

Vinegar has acetate and hydrogen that will lift the stain out of the carpeting. Blot the carpeting before spraying the area down with a mixture of half vinegar and half warm water. Blot up the mixture after a few minutes, and clean up the excess vinegar with warm water.
